The programme was designed jointly with the Swedish Defence University, which hosted the training and shared insights into the challenges and implementation of Lessons Learned within the Swedish Armed Forces.

What is the course about?

  • NATO and Ukrainian Lessons Learned methodology
  • Changes in Ukraine’s Lessons Learned system since the start of the full-scale invasion
  • The role of civil society in defence
  • The use of modern technologies and the adaptation of AI for analytical needs

“The traditional notion of a ‘front line’ has disappeared. It has been replaced by a ‘grey zone’—a strip anywhere from several hundred meters to ten kilometres wide, where Ukrainian and Russian positions are intertwined. In modern warfare, this is an area constantly monitored by drones and exposed to fire from both sides. These are new realities that require new approaches. Ukraine is gaining invaluable experience in a dynamic defence environment and adapting methodologies to counter the enemy more effectively. Understanding the context of modern warfare is essential in order to adapt European defence capabilities to emerging challenges.”
Pavlo Musiienko, Head of the Analytical Department at the Boryviter Centre of Excellence

The European Security and Defence College (ESDC) plans to make Boryviter’s course a permanent offering. The programme will continue to evolve in order to expand its audience, deepen cooperation, and engage national Lessons Learned systems of partner countries.

“This course marks the first practical step in our cooperation with the European Security and Defence College. We are particularly honoured to deliver it together with the Swedish Defence University. This partnership underscores the role of the Boryviter Centre of Excellence as an integral part of Europe’s defence architecture.”
Tetiana Ostra, Co-Founder of the Boryviter Centre of Excellence

Ukraine’s experience is highly valued in Europe, as the country stands at the forefront of the eastern flank. Cooperation between Boryviter and the ESDC is a strategically important step toward strengthening Ukraine’s defence capabilities and advancing its integration with European security structures.

As a reminder, Boryviter joined the European Security and Defence College (ESDC) network in October 2024. The Centre of Excellence is now part of a community of more than 100 leading civilian and military institutes, colleges, academies, universities, and other institutions engaged in security and defence policy across Europe and beyond.

The collaboration between Boryviter and the European Security and Defence College is a strategic step toward strengthening Ukraine’s defense capabilities and integrating with European security structures.
