Boryviter and the Ministry of Defence Conducted a Study of UxS Engineering Workshops
Boryviter team, together with the Unmanned Systems Competence Centre of the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine, conducted a study of engineering workshops supporting unmanned systems (UxS).
Based on the findings, Boryviter analysts prepared and submitted reports to the Ministry of Defence to inform further work on solutions for developing this capability.
Purpose of the Study
Engineering workshops have emerged directly within military units in response to their practical needs. Today, they perform functions critical to combat operations: this is where equipment is prepared for use, configured, and tested before missions.
However, there has so far been no systematic description of their activities. Their roles, organisational structures, staffing requirements, approaches to resourcing, and specialist training remained undefined.
The research initiative originated from Boryviter Military School and its need to update the engineering training programme in line with the actual tasks performed by the workshops. At the same time, experts from the Unmanned Systems Competence Centre of the Ministry of Defence were developing the “UxS Engineering Workshops” concept and needed evidence-based data on how these structures operate within military units.
How the Study Was Conducted
The study consisted of three components:
- a survey of workshop representatives;
- in-depth interviews;
- field research conducted directly at workshops operating at different organisational levels.
This approach made it possible to examine the workshops’ functions and ways of working, as well as identify common patterns, challenges, and existing practices.
Next Steps
The findings provide a foundation for the Ministry of Defence’s further work on developing the UxS Engineering Workshops concept.
For Boryviter, the research will help improve the engineering training programme to better reflect the real-world tasks and needs of specialists serving in military units.
