Structuring the Chaos of War: Implementing AAR Methodology for Mass Casualty Operations

A Mass Casualty (MASCAL) situation—where the number of wounded instantly overwhelms available medical resources—creates severe operational chaos. Without a structured analytical framework, critical mistakes made during moments of extreme stress are bound to be repeated in future operations, costing lives.

At the Ukrainian Tactical Medicine Forum 3.0, Boryviter’s Analytical Department presented a detailed case study of a MASCAL event that occurred during a complex water-crossing operation. Boryviter demonstrated how to apply a rigorous seven-step After-Action Review methodology directly in the field, moving from unforeseen circumstances to observation, analysis, and an immediate remedial actions plan.

The presentation proved that institutional learning is a practical tool that can be rapidly deployed within combat units to alter the course of an operation. By converting chaotic, high-casualty incidents into structured algorithms, Boryviter contributes to a systemic overhaul of tactical medicine protocols, establishing scalable, life-saving standards across all military echelons.
